Modern Ranch House Conversion 2, Mountain View, CA
Designed 2009, Completed 2010

Site: Post-WWII Ranch House Neighborhood
A beautiful tree- lined street with many well-kept ranch homes. Ther are no modern homes on the block.

Design Objectives: Make it bigger, and more like an Eichler!
The owners had previously lived in an Eichler home that they tastefully remodeled on their own. They wanted their new house to feel more open and modern like an Eichler, as well as literally be larger to fit the practical needs of the family. Connection to the outdoors and sustainability were important considerations.

Solution: Don't go up, go back!
Originally, the owners thought a second story addition would be required to preserve enough back yard on this relatively small lot while still satisfying the program. While we did provide a couple 2-story designs, we also took the initiative to fit the program into one level. We were able to extend toward the back, provide the space required, provide the desired openness and modern style, and save money with the single-story design.

We respected the neighborhood and the owners' budget by making only relatively smalll changes to the front of the house. The changes were certainly not insignificant, and did provide a much more contemporary street presence (without offfending the neighbors).

The tile, fixtures, and finishes were collaboratively chosen, with the owners exhibiting their excellent taste with each choice they made.
